After trying to sell foodstuff and homeware, Meghan Markle is now peddling clothes. What won’t she sell?
That Meghan Markle continues to sell things and links her name to the merchandise must mean she believes that she has many fans who would latch on to everything she likes. Her much-maligned With Love, Meghan series may not have turned out as adored and widely-watched as she had hoped, but she seems to believe—and admirably so—that the dull clothes she wears with affected nonchalance on the just-as-bland show would appeal to those who love her crudité and consider it high culinary art. Ms Markle (sorry, we’re sticking to the familar) has just unveiled a ShopMy page, on which she curates those pieces she thinks her adoring fans (mainly Americans, we suspect) would buy to mimic her whatever lewk (sorry, Mindy Kaling).
ShopMy is one of two main reasons that got member of the Trump administration McLaurine Pinover in the news headlines recently. The other, her delectable influencer-style reels shot during working hours in her office that she shared on Instagram (content now deleted). Almost like a shoppable Pinterest, ShopMy allows you to share images of the clothes you wear or like, with links to the website that offers them. If sales are concluded on those items after a viewer clicks on them, you may earn a commission. The website entices would-be recommenders by stating that you could “easily create a beautiful, customizable storefront for your favorite product collections”. It also describes its business model as “your taste, made effortlessly shoppable”.

So what is the taste of the admirably indefatigable Ms Markle that you might not already know? So lacking in depth of anything savor? Even if you don’t yet own a white shirt (yes, that’s the genius first item of the selection!) and everything ecru you need, you will be as thrilled by the clothes as by her transferring a bag of pretzels into another, and convincing you it’s an extraordinarily good idea. Like her show, the 35 wardrobe basics are so uninspiring and unengaging—and unelevated— that even her unquestioning fans would find it hard to be stirred by her unarousing post on Instagram to announce her ShopMy venture: “Many of you have asked, so here you go! A little shopping to start the week.” What a girlfriend.
And there is the pettifogging detail: A reminder that she wishes to be known as Meghan Sussex. In the path of the URL of her website after the first forward slash are the letters ‘ms’. Not exactly discreet. And the header of the page reads, “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex”, she who offers “a handpicked and curated collection of the things I love”. She also added, between asterisks, “Please note, some products may contain commissionable links” so that it is clear that she would be making money out of the recommendations—in the name of transparency. It is hard to reconcile the fact that someone with a title living in a US$15 million (in 2020) Montecito mansion craving for commissions. Money, as you have always known, is the main mission.
