The Enduring Allure of X

Does this look familiar?

No, X—the social media page formerly known as Twitter—is not into creating their own merchandise. Well, at least not barely a month after the sudden and intrusive name change. This ‘X’ dangles at an angle from a hooped holder that is the keyring of a series that runs the gamut of the entire English alphabet. But it is this X that recently caught our attention for no other reason than how similar it looks to the new single-letter logo of the social media that Elon Musk bought and revamped. We are surprised that Mr Musk did not buy the entire stock from Mulberry so that he could present them as corporate gifts to those who adores what he has done or, better still, give it to the staff as part of their uniforms. As Mulberry coaxes: “Add a touch of personalisation with this colourful enamel letter keyring.”

The alphabet pendant of the Mulberry keyring is in brass and enamel in the colour that is described as “poseidon blue”. Black, as it turns out, is not available for the ‘X’. The keyring in the era of digital locks for doors is, of course, an oddity. Some images by retailers, therefore, show them used as charms for bags. We suspect many would use them on any accessory that needs decorative enhancement, the identifying of the initial of your first name, or good ’ol brand-name boost. Indeed for many luxury brands, such danglies are available so that bags can enjoy ornamentation that’ll say you can afford the satchel and more. But, as Professor X of the X-Men would say, “The next time you feel like showing off… Don’t.” But that probably does not apply to The Richest Man in the World.
