Amazing Greene

Marjorie Taylor Greene shows that non-Whites are not the only ones who face her xenophobic wrath

She probably does not “give a crap about [our] opinion”, but it does not matter. Marjorie Taylor Greene is everything about MAGA women that many find hard to appreciate or understand. Not that she cares. Her only known way of presenting herself publicly is not be affable. Niceness is beneath her. Barking is better. In an exchange that has gone viral on social media, Ms Greene was seen loudly berating a UK journalist at a recent press conference in, presumably, Washington D.C.. Sky News reporter, Martha Kelner, was asking her about the recent Trump administration scandal, the so-called “Signalgate”, but Ms Greene would not let her proceed. She interrupted the journalist and went full Karen: “What country, wait, what country are you from?”

It is likely that she was ready to strike the minute she heard the unmistakably British accent. “We don’t give a crap about your opinion and your reporting,” she shouted, pointing her left index finger at the unfazed journalist. “Why don’t you go back to your country, where you have a major migrant problem? You should care about your own borders.” Ms Kelner, just doing what she was supposed to do—her job, pressed on. But the bellicose Republican congress woman, also a noted heckler, would have none of it. She refused to answer the question, choosing to chastise-deflect. “Do you care about people from your country? What about all the women that are raped by migrants? Do you care? Okay, you’re done,” singing the old Republican tune that all migrants are criminals and rapists. If she truly cares about women, why was she treating another so badly?

Ms Greene in green—a zip-front top, unfastened to reveal two chains, one with a cross and another with a medallion, both dangling above a very visible zip puller—was livid throughout that brief exchange. Many on social media reiterated that Ms Greene is easily triggered as she is unable to curb her baser instincts. Showing her disdain for the foreigner, she turned and pointed to someone in the audience and asked him to say his question. He offered: “I’m an American and I’d like to hear your answer to what she’s asking.” Undaunted, she cried: “I’m not answering her question because I don’t care about her network. If you would like to ask, I can answer.” He did. And she took a page right out of the playbook of her boss in the Oval Office: blame Joe Biden for their border problems. After praising Mr Biden’s successor, she stormed off, scurrying away in fuming defeat.

The top and matching pants that she wore appeared to have been pieces bought at a Lululemon or Athleta sale. We could not see the bottom clearly, but the ensemble—including the elasticised cuff of the top’s slim sleeves—was unmistakably athleisure (to better stalk off press conferences in?). And that curious shade of military green! Was she—or the country she represents—at war? Her look brought to mind what a particular White House guest wore early this month, for which he enraged many Trump appointees and their adoring MAGA masses, including Marjorie Taylor Greene’s journalist boyfriend, Brian Glenn, an anchor at Real America’s Voice. Perhaps, there are dress standards that do not apply to her. Just as there are professional decorum and decency that are simply not suited.
