Uniqlo is not killing its most popular crossbody any time soon. At the end of February, there will be a gingham version
Uniqlo sure knows how to extend the life of a good bag. Their Round Mini Shoulder Bag, introduced in April 2023, was named one of the hottest products in The Lyst Index of the following year and quickly appreciated for its capaciousness despite its “mini” size. Uniqlo would come to describe their hit bag as a “storage marvel that captivated the world”. And from that high point, the Japanese brand has not stopped producing them, introducing seasonal colours as they do their U AIRism Cotton Oversized Crew Neck T-Shirt (also known as “the SG uniform of Singaporean men”), as well as prints from characters of Studio Ghibli.
Even the newly installed Clare Waight Keller had a hand in the Round Mini, putting out the upsized version in faux leather. Later, during the summer season of last year, there was even an admittedly fetching crochet version, which TikTok fashionistas deem a “must-have”. Then, a “sporty” version, with piping on the curved bottom perimeter of the bag and striped straps, was introduced. There was also the collaboration with Marimekko, which resulted in the Finnish brand’s bold florals and uneven stripes appearing on the bags. You’d think that Uniqlo has had quite a spin with their most popular bag and that many Uniqlo fans would have had enough of the Round Mini.
Apparently not. For this spring/summer season, a new version in gingham (four colour choices) will be available. The bag retains its shape and capacity of the original, but the micro-check lends it a modern graphic or country-charm vibe, depending on how one styles it. This time, the surface treatment of the polyester shell used has been described as “seersucker” (it is hard to tell from the supplied photos, but it is likely textured). For contrast, the straps come in colour-coordinated striped polyester canvas. In sum, a handsome crossbody for anybody.
