This Is Trump’s Lawyer

Alina Habba was at the Trump MSG rally, dressed like Dolly Parton

Sorry, we meant no insult to Dolly Parton. Alina Habba certainly made an entrance—she danced her way onto the stage, as if she was performing at the Grand Ole Opry. Who she was trying to outdo, it was not certain. Elon Musk? Not required to wear court clothes, Ms Habba attended her idol’s rally in Madison Square Garden (MAG) in a fitted, angpow-red lace top and similarly-coloured slender slacks, with the waist right up to below her bust. Over her shoulders, she threw on a gaudily-sequinned jacket, with MAGA in red emblazoned at the back. She posed with her back facing the audience to make sure they saw what she wore. When she was ready to speak, she took off her jacket and placed it over the lectern, tied the sleeves to the microphone, and adjusted the garment so that the four-letter word faced the audience. And she said: “You see, I put my MAGA jacket to trigger Hilary Clinton.” Whatever for?

Ms Habba was up there, among the many unknowns, eager to denigrate—including that comedian who insulted Puerto Ricans by calling their home circumscribed by sea “floating island of garbage”—that Donald Trump loves to surround himself with. She serve not only as his lawyer, but also as a senior advisor for MAGA Inc, the Super PAC that supports the former president, and she made sure her audience knew it by wearing that conspicuous jacket on stage, even wiggling in it. “The world first got to know me on the courtroom steps, right here in New York City,” she introduced herself, after bobbing like an excited child. It was in the courtroom that she failed her client rather spectacularly. Despite her questionable performance representing the Donald, she continues to be part of his inner circle and is known to be close to Eric Trump and and his partner Kimberly Guilfoyle.

Often described by the right-leaning media as “glamorous”, Ms Habba is no fashion neophyte. Her tacky turn-out on the stage in MSG belied her background in New York’s garment industry. Between 2005 and 2007, after graduating from the private Lehigh University, she worked in accessories production and even marketing at Marc Jacobs. Whether she interfaced with the designer is not known. Despite the foundational advantage in fashion, Ms Habba has not appeared to be stupendously stylish, just politically appropriate. She dresses in a manner that seems calculated to delight Palm Beach housewives/socialites or those whose greatest thrill in life is to score an invitation to Mar-a-Lago. In dress, she is MAGA-pleasing or Trump-delighting, and that jacket confirmed her gaudy and abysmal propensities.

Her fashion sense is garish, just as her manner of speech is crass. Not only did she have a go at Hilary Clinton, she went hard on Kamala Harris, probably the real subject of her derisive performance. In her screaming and screeching voice, she said, “Kamala Harris, you are getting evicted from my president’s house” and then repeated that sad hope (alongside grievances): “On November 5th, Donald Trump will say to Kamala one very important thing (pausing for effect): ‘You are fired’.” Alina Habba, a believer “in something called the constitution” and “in someone called god”, then said of the very blue state: “New York is clearly with us. It’s MAGA country too!” Wishful thinking can’t be any louder, or more tastelessly showy.
