Put Straight Aside For Round

Alaïa has created the shapeliest jeans out there

Once, at Uniqlo, we overheard a girl telling her boyfriend, who was trying on a pair of joggers, that it was “too baggy”. To be sure, it was not. Many jeans lovers are simply unable to put away their skinny jeans. In fact, both men and women still prefer buying pants, not just jeans, that hug the limbs, so tightly sometimes that they show the shape of the calves. Even at Levi’s, their jeans tend to veer towards the lean. Despite the trend of roomier trousers, many wearers still prefer them somewhat constricted. And it is not easy to find those with stylish girth. But now, there is the Alaïa jeans, not just with a welcome width of the legs, but in a captivating shape that the maison calls round”.

By round, the brand isn’t referring to, say, the face of a clock. The roundness—curve to be more precise—is in the arc of the outseam. In fact, the inseam is very straight, almost perpendicular to the hem. When the legs are placed side by side, the silhouette is akin to an oval. The jeans is given a rather high waist and a close-fit at the hip, which exaggerates the roundness of the legs. Therein, for us, lies the appeal. It comes in only one shade of indigo—stone-washed and then “after-washed by hand” (as the brand elaborates) to yield the vintage fade. At the back, there is a triangular yoke under the waistband and additional stitching that forms a splayed Chinese number three (三), possibly to give a corseted effect to the rear. All in all, swell.
